Welcome to the HVO web site!

Being healthy, for many of us, is something we often take for granted. For millions of people around the world, however, good health is not a given and access to health care is a remote possibility. The World Health Organization has indicated that the most crucial problem in global health today is the acute shortage of health care professionals, a shortage estimated at 4 million.

HVO volunteers are addressing this need by providing education, mentoring and professional development opportunities to health care providers in more than 80 programs in 25 countries around the world. There are many ways that you can become involved – volunteer, become a member, donate, share HVO’s web site with friends and colleagues, and help build awareness of the problem. Our web site is a work in progress, as we constantly post updated program information, articles about international health issues, and links to interesting resources. So I invite you to visit the site often.

Your involvement ensures that HVO will be able to continue to make important strides in the education and support of one of the world’s scarcest resources – health care professionals!
