HEMATOLOGY

Siem Reap, Cambodia - Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC)

Hematology volunteers with expertise in clinical laboratory hematology can assist in optimizing the functioning of the laboratory through a systems-based approach. Pediatric hematologists/oncologists with experience running a lab are specifically recruited to work toward several objectives such as implementation of an algorithm for reflexive testing of children with anemia, enhancing ability of lab staff to provide info to clinicians that may be helpful in patients' diagnoses and responses to diseases/treatment, training in using iron testing, working to align AHC hematology lab to WHO transfusion standards as well as other specific objectives. Previous international travel and/or work experience is preferred.  Assignments range from 2 - 4 weeks.

Lima, Peru – EsSalud Hospital System

Volunteers will be placed in one or more Level III or IV hospitals throughout Peru. This program aims to provide further training and staff development for physicians, residents, students, and laboratory technicians in the field of hematology. HVO volunteers work with the on-site physicians and the HVO program directors to identify and continue to monitor the needs of each of the sites, implement improved training measures and provide education to residents, physicians, and lab scientists. By working in multiple hospitals, HVO volunteers foster greater communication between the hospitals, while at the same time ensuring that each site becomes equally able to provide state-of-the-art hematologic care. Pediatric or adult hematology/oncology clinicians, final year residents if paired with an attending, or laboratory-based scientists are suitable for this site. Previous international travel and/or work experience is preferred.  Assignments range from 1 - 4 weeks.

Kampala, Uganda – Makerere University & Mulago Hospital

This program seeks to improve training in hematology to clinicians, laboratory technicians, technologists, and students at the Mulago Hospital by providing training in diagnosis, bone marrow and blood smear interpretations, pediatric and adult hematology, and hematologic oncology.  This program will also work to provide an interface between the laboratory staff and the clinical staff in the interpretation and diagnosis of blood-related illnesses. Volunteers should have a current medical license and be board-certified/eligible in hematology and/or oncology. Final year residents recruited if paired with an attending.  Previous international travel and/or work experience is preferred. Assignments are from 2 - 4 weeks.
