VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT PROCESS

There are multiple steps to the placement process and often more than one approval is required. The process varies slightly from country to country and project to project. We strive to make this process as quick as possible but potential volunteers should be aware that final approval can take several months. Feel free to be in touch with your recruiter about where your application is in the process.

  • To begin the placement process, you must submit a Volunteer Profile Form to the HVO office. Click here for the profile form. (Please note: depending on the program you may also be asked to provide a CV)
  • Once the profile form is submitted, a recruiter will contact you to discuss volunteer opportunities.
  • After discussions with a recruiter, you will decide which location(s) to pursue. The recruiter will then forward the proper documents to the Program Director(s).

Please note: All program directors are volunteers located in the US or Canada. They have been to the site and have a clear understanding of the needs of the program and the necessary qualifications of volunteers.

  • Please do not contact program directors prior to submitting the profile form!

  • If the decision is made to move forward with a site, then the program director(s) will contact your references to verify your credentials and suitability for the program (you should notify your references that they will be contacted by the program director).
  • Your paperwork will be forwarded to the site for review and approval.
  • Once approved for an assignment, you will then work with the recruiter to finalize dates and other administrative tasks.
  • All volunteers with confirmed assignments must be members of HVO. Membership dues are a critical source of funding for HVO and help defray the costs associated with recruiting, briefing and placing volunteers. These costs are in excess of $950 per placement. To join, click here and use our secure web site or call the HVO office at 202-296-0928.
  • After you have been confirmed (and your membership is current), you will receive an orientation packet from HVO (about 4 to 6 months before your assignment date) with background information to help you plan your trip. You will also have access to the HVO KnowNET, a web-based platform that serves as a virtual community for HVO members, volunteers, staff and others to share ideas, information and knowledge. There are extensive orientation materials available on this site and you are encouraged to visit it often as you prepare for your assignment.
