FELLOWSHIPS AND FUNDRAISING
HVO volunteers pay for transportation to and from the sites. Some sites provide room, board and daily transportation for volunteers once they arrive. Most travel, living expenses and related costs are tax-deductible for those who file tax returns with the US Internal Revenue Service.
HVO manages a fellowship for final year anesthesiology residents and a fellowship for residents/fellows in hand surgery. Details on the application process will be posted on this site at a later date. If you subscribe to the HVO e-newsletter, the Net Connection, you will be notified about the application process and deadlines for submission. For a list of active fellowships, click here.
HVO has two fundraising tools available to members and volunteers interested in raising funds to support a specific HVO project or to help offset the out-of-pocket costs of an assignment.
- FirstGiving – a web-based tool that allows you to create a personalized page about your project. It is easy to upload a few photos, develop and insert some text, and then send a link to your friends and colleagues asking for their support. All donations made on your page are tax-deductible and come directly to HVO along with a report identifying the project. All donors will receive a thank you letter from HVO. You are able to keep track of the donations received. Details about the disbursement of funds will be given to you by HVO staff. Call the office if you are interested in setting up a page!
- Volunteers for Prosperity (VfP) - VFPServ is an innovative public-private partnership designed to address financial challenges faced by skilled Americans interested in short-term international volunteer service. VFPServ provides matching grants to qualified volunteers in amounts ranging from $500 to $1000 to offset travel, insurance and local living costs. In order to receive funding from this program the volunteer must raise an equal amount of funds (i.e. if the volunteer is requesting a matching grant of $500, they must also raise $500 from their friends and family). In order to apply, you need a confirmed assignment with HVO. For more details, click here.
