Infectious Diseases Primer The distribution of adverse health conditions is not equal across the globe. In developed countries, the primary causes of mortality are chronic diseases such as heart disease. In developing countries, the main causes of morbidity and mortality are infectious diseases such as malaria and AIDS, although the incidence of chronic diseases is rising. In response to requests from volunteers, HVO staff has compiled information on diseases one is likely to see while on assignment.

The lists are divided by geographic region using the CDC model. This is not a complete list of pathogens nor is the information comprehensive. However, there are links for each disease where you can obtain more information. Hopefully the information given will allow the volunteer to become aware of the different pathologies seen in developing countries and that will result in better preparation for the volunteer's assignment.
